During the pre-dawn hours of
September 1, 2007, the Earth
slammed into a swarm of debris
left behind by the ancient Comet
Kiess, creating a meteor shower
known as the Aurigids.
Though light from a waning
gibbous moon illuminated the
desert sky, the camera did
capture this bright meteor that
burst into view between the
constellations Eridanus and
Horologium, low in the
southeastern sky. The
constellation Orion appears in
the upper left, while the bright
star Sirius shines prominently
near the trees below it. |
