From the Gran
Chaco of Paraguay, this
magnificent "diamond ring" was
shot only seconds before the
total solar eclipse of November
3, 1994, as the final beam of
sunlight shone over the lunar
horizon. It shows the moon
silhouetted against the sun's
inner corona, as well as the
sun's pinkish chromosphere, only
a few thousand miles deep.
Along the sun's edge arch
several red prominences, the
largest of which at the very top could engulf
three Earths. |
