Even light from a first quarter
moon can't prevent the stars
from shining brightly over the
Mungo National Park in
southeastern Australia.
Along the Milky Way, several
prominent features are easily
visible: the pinkish hue of the
Eta Carina Nebula (left center),
the bright stars Beta and Alpha
Centauri (just above the
horizon) and―midway between the
two―the exquisite constellation
of Crux, the Southern Cross.
Just to the right of the Cross
appears a dark "hole" in the
Milky Way; this is known
as the Coal Sack, a massive
cloud of gas and dust that's
seen in silhouette against the
more distant stars. |
