Late on the afternoon of August
31, 2006, the sky over Southern
California's Anza-Borrego Desert
took on quite a colorful
appearance. In this image,
a segment of a rainbow emerges
as a colorful spear from the
bottom of the cloud while, at
the top, violent internal
updrafts are tearing the cloud
upward like taffy. The
majority of the cloud is being
illuminated by the reddish light
of the setting sun but the
updraft at the top still appears
white, apparently shielded from
the sun's direct rays. |
