On May 18, 2007, the crescent
moon and Venus formed a
beautiful pair against the
waning light of dusk. The
sight greeted me quite
unexpectedly as I stepped out of
a building in Nazareth,
Pennsylvania, armed with only a
simple "point 'n shoot" camera
and tripod.
Though the moon
is in its crescent phase, its
full disk is faintly illuminated
by earthshine—sunlight reflected
back to the moon by the Earth
itself.
The three faint stars appearing
below Venus are those in the
northernmost leg and foot of
Gemini, the twins. |
