When the full
moon rises at dusk over a city,
it can produce a spectacular and
romantic sight. The thick
atmosphere through which its
light must travel at moonrise
creates its yellow or reddish
color. The moon’s immense size,
however, is simply an illusion
caused by the brain's inability
to reconcile several conflicting
visual cues. This photo blends
16 separate images to show the
full moon rising at 4-minute
intervals over the skyline of
San Diego, California, on May 7, 2001.
