On September 22, 2005, a
Minotaur rocket lit up the early
evening desert sky shortly after
its launch
from Southern California's
Vandenberg Air Force Base.
The multi-colored clouds from
the rocket's exhaust had been
twisted by upper atmospheric winds
and were now back-lit by the sun, which
had set less than an hour
earlier behind
the mountains to the west of
Borrego Springs, California.
