ISS & STAR TRAILS

Early in the evening of April 26, 2007, the International Space Station (ISS) made a bright pass over the Southwestern U.S.  In this time-lapse photo from my front yard in Borrego Springs, California, ISS appears as the bright white streak from the left to the top right.  The stars appear streaked in concentric circles about the north celestial pole (marked approximately by Polaris, the North Star) because, during the long exposure the Earth was rotating in the opposite direction.  The sky and trees were illuminated by the light of the waxing gibbous moon.
